Art Exhibition at Hyundai Department Store

Mieke van der Merwe has a solo exhibit on at the Hyundai Department Store in Dong-gu, all this month (October). The exhibit contains 15 pieces, and is titled “A Traveller’s Perspective”.

Originally from South Africa, Mieke has been living in Pohang for about a year and a half, teaching English. She graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in 2010, with Graphic Design as her major.  Since then she has been a part of numerous exhibitions in Cape Town, but this will be her first exhibition in Korea.

“A friend of mine who works at Hyundai department store saw my work and thought it would appeal to their clients. He presented examples of my work to their marketing team and they asked me if I wanted to exhibit in gallery H for the month of October. I was very lucky to get this great opportunity,” said Mieke.

She has also been privileged enough to have been featured on several blogs and online magazines, such as NICE magazine, Molskine Russia, was a featured artist on Swatch playground’s website and Elle decoration magazine. One of her artworks was also published in House and Leisure Magazine, South Africa, during the month of April this year.

“Traveling has influenced my art tremendously and a lot of my work surrounds that theme. In 2008 I went abroad for the first time where after I was hooked. Since then, I have traveled to countries such as Hong Kong, Vietnam,

Cambodia, Spain, England, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France and Czech Republic.

“One of the things I enjoy most about traveling is experiencing new things and recording them in my journal. To me a journal is a place where I can capture the essence and spirit of a country through way of expression that a photograph often fails to capture.”

“I would describe my work as loose and expressive, portraying more the feeling of my surroundings rather than a perfect realistic representative. For me the process of making the picture is very important. When I make a mistake I work it into my picture and even feel it contributes to it. ”

Mieke’s future plans are to finish her Master’s degree in Illustration in America or Europe and pursue a career as an

Illustration lecturer at a University.

There are 15 pieces and the prices range between 200, 000- 400,000 won per piece, already framed. (The works are between A3- A2,  bigger with the frame)
