MERS – What You Should Know

The internet in Korea is buzzing with information about the MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). The rumour mills also have been running day in and day out which is confusing the issue for most people who are concerned about the safety of their families and themselves.

The Canadian Embassy now warns about following media reports during this time and suggests heading to credible sources  of information like WHO website Also noted from the letter sent out by the Canadian Embassy is that, as of this time, there are no restrictions on entry into Canada. However, they stated that people coming into Korea may face increased passenger screening.

The Ulsan Metropolitan Police have issued prevention flyers in many languages to help inform people of precautionary measures to help stop the spread of the virus. As of now, no schools in the Ulsan area have been shut down because of the virus. However, if you are working in a school or crowded area, I would advise you to wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer.

Since the disease is not airborne, practicing general hygiene with help reduce the risk. A particular troublesome spot noted on the facebook page is the number people who do not cover their mouths when coughing. However, with the increased spotlight on these basic hygienic habits, perhaps people will start to cover their mouths.
