Everything You Need to Know About Ulsan

Ulsan Family Loses Everything

Local UK expat Peter Muffet, his Korean wife Mia and their 2 children (ages 1 and 8) are dealing with the most unimaginable tragedy that unfolded on February 12th. Their family home was engulfed in flames for nearly an hour which destroyed everything they own. There are no words to express the shock and sorrow their family is feeling.

Mia and the children were unharmed however Peter sustained significant burns covering nearly half of his lower body and a lot of his back, which will require multiple surgeries. He is still being heavily medicated to deal with the excruciating pain and will be for the foreseeable future. His recovery time is expected to be 3 to 6 months with no guarantee of regaining full range of motion. As a result, he is not able to work, play with his children, or even leave the burn unit at the hospital.

Peter is a very caring, loving and generous man. He regularly wore funny costumes at work to make a point of making new kids feel welcome in his class (like Patch Adams). He especially loved families and children, and was the kind of guy who invited all of the children from his daughter’s kindergarten out to his country home so that they would have a chance to run around in their big yard and learn about the earth. He even went as far as to inviting the children and parents out for Earth Day to plant trees.

He also never missed an opportunity to host family gatherings at his home. Christmas, Easter, Halloween and more, he always went all out to let so many children experience “proper” Western culture.

Lastly, he has selflessly volunteered his time for the local Orphanage regularly for the past 3 years at the monthly visits, festivals and behind the scenes.

Sometimes tragedy takes everything away from us, as it did to Peter and his family. But, as a community we can at the very least help Peter and Mia regain part of their dignity by giving them the chance to clothe, feed, and put a roof over the heads of their children. Help give their family a chance to get back on their feet. Be to Peter, what he has been to the community.

At this point, a temporary apartment has been secured and most material donations have been collected to help them get back on their feet. At this point monetary donations would be greatly appreciated to help with lost wages, food, and day to day expenses. An update will be posted next week regarding their situation and if any other material donations could help.

Thank you so much to those of you that have already so graciously donated things from your home!

Finally, an announcement will be made in the coming days for a fundraising event at Cima (Samsandong) that Al has so kindly volunteered to host.

Monetary donations can be made to Mia’s bank account:      Nonghyup Bank (NH)           Account Number: 356 0433 0321 13      Name: 양미경
