Visa Bullet Hasn’t been Dodged Yet

While last week’s news of a suspected pedophile Native English speaker teacher seemed to have been buried under the clamour of more brutal rapes by Korean nationals, we haven’t dodged any bullets yet. This mornings news from the Korea Times has lawmaker Choi Young-Hee proposing even tighter rules and regulations for obtaining visas. She claims that some teachers have been able to obtain other teaching positions in Korea despite committing sex crimes. She wants to remove the loophole by requiring criminal background checks and drug tests within one month of applying for a position. Current laws require the background check to have been conducted within 6 months of application.
