Microbrewery – Jango

Posted by on May 23, 2014 in | Comments Off on Microbrewery – Jango

By Robert Landon,  May 18th, 2014   Who’da thunk it?  All of a sudden there’s real beer in Ulsan!   The latest addition to the list of watering holes is in Seongnam-Dong.  Jango Micro-brewery – just across the street (Jungang Gil, 중앙길) from Sarojin or Tool Box  – depending on your point of reference – and up the stairs on the 2nd level.  It’s a bright, airy place, with exposed brick and wood décor, and a relaxed, modern,...

Actual Chinese – Gugugu

Posted by on Apr 23, 2014 in | Comments Off on Actual Chinese – Gugugu

As far as I know, this is the only authentic Chinese restaurant in Ulsan.  No jjajangmyeon or kimchi, it’s the real thing.  There are some other lamb skewer places around and small restaurants, but here you have a big selection and no apparent attempt to Koreanify the food. If you know Chinese food at all, you know that there is huge regional variety and the very term ‘Chinese food’ is kind of useless.  This restaurant offers dishes from all...

北京(북경)양꼬치: Beijing Lamb Skewers

Lamb Skewers and Authentic Chinese food in Seongnamdong. “If you want jjajangmyeon, get out.”   So it turns out there’s a restaurant that serves traditional northern Chinese food in Ulsan.  It’s apparently been around for years.  On my way back home, I was taking a side road when I saw this place and decided that I just had to stop by.  I only know of a few authentically Chinese restaurants in Ulsan – most are more typically Korean-ized Chinese...

Cheese Galmagi-sal in Taehwa-dong

Posted by on Apr 23, 2014 in | Comments Off on Cheese Galmagi-sal in Taehwa-dong

If you did a search for the Korean word “갈매기” in a Korean dictionary you’d find a shocking translation of “Seagull” However, you will not find any seagull meat here. 갈매기살 (pronounced “Galmagi sal”) is roughly translated as bits of pork skirt steak and it is delicious. This regular looking restaurant located along Taehwa-dong’s “Bulgogi Street” seems normal enough. However, if you read the sign in Korean you will see a word that does not belong “Cheese” That...

베테랑 – Fusion BBQ at its best

Posted by on Feb 23, 2014 in | Comments Off on 베테랑 – Fusion BBQ at its best

I was introduced to this restaurant a while back, but I hesitated reviewing it for the site, as it’s already quite busy, and I didn’t want everyone rushing out to try it, making it impossible for me to get a seat. But I’ve decided to not be so selfish, and to let you all in on this secret (which I’m sure some of you are familiar with already). Beh Teh Rang (literally “Veteran” or “Expert”) Barbeque (베테랑 바베큐) is...

Sushi Mori

If you’re looking for AMAZING sushi, look no more. Right next door to New York Kitchen in Samsan-dong, a few blocks from Hyundai Department Store, there’s this gem of a place where you can get a truly authentic sushi experience. The dining area consists of a long counter with seating for fourteen. That’s the only space available, and it gets crowded pretty fast on weekends, so you may want to plan ahead and make a reservation. The owner mr...

Nice Mongolia Cafe

Nice Mongolia is, to the best of my knowledge, Ulsan’s only combination Mongolian restaurant/karaoke bar.  The Mongolian karaoke I can’t speak to, though you will get to enjoy hearing it through a wall while you eat.  I know the food’s good. The restaurant itself should be familiar to anyone who has enjoyed Central Asian food before.  I assume there’s some store that does nothing but outfit these places.  Enjoy the light ball on the ceiling and jars of mystery...

La Coppia contemporary Italian restaurant – A pleasant surprise

Posted by on Feb 3, 2014 in | Comments Off on La Coppia contemporary Italian restaurant – A pleasant surprise

Italians living abroad are often wary of restaurants prominently displaying our national flag and sporting Italian names, so I was dubious as I approached La Coppia in the alleys behind Hyundai Dept Store, despite my Korean lunch companion having warmly recommended it (or perhaps because of it). As I clumsily tried to brave the three wooden steps leading to the front door with my bulky stroller, we were met by a member of the staff who helped lift said...

Cheong Hae Wool

Ssambap is one of my favourite Korean meals: there’s nothing I love more than a table full of little side dishes — meat, fish, vegetables, soup — to accompany a bowl of fragrant rice. This restaurant (which unfortunately doesn’t have an English name) doesn’t look like it’s been in business for long but it surely will make a name for itself as they offer very good food for a very reasonable price: just 12,000 won per person. The restaurant...

Foreigner Town

Some say the best restaurant is your very own kitchen. Foreigner Town is no restaurant, but has an amazing amount of essentials for those that have a few culinary skills and a wish to eat at home. No bigger than a bedroom, Foreigner Town makes up in variety what it lacks in space.  On the mere dozen or so shelves in this small store one can find such rarities as taco shells, fajita seasoning, oatmeal, chick peas, ripe olives,...
