Everything You Need to Know About Ulsan

Sushi Mori

If you’re looking for AMAZING sushi, look no more. Right next door to New York Kitchen in Samsan-dong, a few blocks from Hyundai Department Store, there’s this gem of a place where you can get a truly authentic sushi experience.

The dining area consists of a long counter with seating for fourteen. That’s the only space available, and it gets crowded pretty fast on weekends, so you may want to plan ahead and make a reservation.

The owner mr Um makes his sushi magic right in front of you, while his wife serves tea and Japanese beer.

The menu is mostly sashimi; toppings include salmon, tuna, eel, shrimp and the like. You must order a set of at least ten; the prices are very reasonable.

There are also taster menus, ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 won, that include a variety of sashimi plus a bowl of udong (the thick Japanese noodles). The one depicted is the “special” one, twelve pieces for 15,000 won.

I must confess I am pretty bad at recognizing fish other than tuna or salmon, so I recommend you try one of the samplers and then if you want more, just ask an extra portion of whichever one(s) you liked best. The owner (who is Korean, not Japanese) speaks little English but he’s really nice and will do his best to communicate with his customers. My personal favourites are the seared salmon and the seared beef sashimi. Mr Um will take out a small blowtorch and blow your food right in front of you… the result is a melt-in-your-mouth experience.

If you like tempura, make sure you leave a little room for this crunchy, delicious fried shrimp.

I must add, due to the layout and the high stools this is not the most kids-friendly of places, but the owner and his wife are truly great and will try to accommodate even younger guests.
