Everything You Need to Know About Ulsan

Fall Colours in Ulsan

Despite the reputation that Ulsan is an industrial city, there are many places around here that you can visit to enjoy the fall season. Most of the locations are accessible by bus and are really worth the visit. Take some time this weekend to check out the beautiful vistas in Ulsan.

Munsu Stadium

I must admit that I was surprised that this place. I didn’t think that it would be so busy but during a Sunday afternoon, there will be a lineup around the stadium of people snapping selfies in the fall foliage. What makes this area special are the numerous benches and places to just sit back and take it all in. Not to mention that if the crowds are not your thing then you can take a walk around Munsu Lake and enjoy the scenery.

When you are finished take a short ride over to Singular Coffee. This has to be one of the most pleasant places to sit and sip a unique coffee in Ulsan. Situated in a hannock home, Singular offers a great view of the fall colours and some awesome coffee. There is also room to sit outside and enjoy the evening air.

Ulsan Grand Park

This is the standard place to head out for fall colours. Ulsan Grand Park has tons of great spots and is simply a great place to take a walk. The area around the lake does get really busy with families and kids zooming by on bikes. So, do be aware of that. One of the best areas is around the windmill  and the main path the runs past it. Early mornings are probably the best time to go to avoid the crowds.

Haksung Park

This small park in the central Ulsan is essentially a hill of lovely trees. It is great for both spring blossoms and fall colours. It is also easy to get to as there is a major bus stop of the same name close by. This park is also a historical park and offers a few decent views of the city.

The Riverside Silver Grass Fields

One of the other views that is common and beautiful this time of year is Silver Grass or “Eoksae” (억새)in Korean. This is peak season and the Taehwa River is one of the best areas to view the grass, within the city limits. Arguably the best spot along the Taehwa is near Myongchon Intersection and going to down along the river in front of  Hyundai Motors. For an elevated view, head there around sunset and walk along the bridge. A fall sunset over the silver grass is a beautiful thing.

Sinbulsan

For the more adventurous types, heading up to Sinbulsan is one of the hardest but most rewarding experiences. Not only is it famous for silver grass but it also offers some amazing views. If you want a bit of variety, hike up to Ganweoljai first and then head over to Sinbulsan.

This will bit a easier but a longer hike. However, it will offer great fall colours and a rest stop at the top. If you are headed strictly for the silver grass, there is a more direct route. Head out to Samnam Middle School and take a taxi up to Geonahmsa Temple. The trail starts right from the temple entrance and will take you right up to the fields. To avoid the crowds and catch the sunrise, start early like 3 or 4 am early.
