Everything You Need to Know About Ulsan

Tulla: Homestyle German Cuisine

The area around the Unmunsa temple is beautiful. What makes it even better is the small village that sits just outside the entrance. It is a charming area filled with restaurants and shops. Everything that you’d expect to find in a small village in the mountains in Korea. Everything except the homestyle German restaurant, Tulla.

When I first heard about it, I was not expecting much. I have been burned by this “homestyle {insert foreign country} food” claim before. Too many times I have eagerly anticipated a delicious meal only to receive stale food bought at the discount section of Home Plus. TULLA IS THE REAL THING!

We were lucky when we went as they typically only allow tables who have reserved in advance. This seemed odd at first but they explained that the food is prepared in such a way that they only have so much to go around. This makes sense when you realize that they have two locations and the Chef works at both. Thus, they have to transport all of the food from Busan to Unmunsa themselves.

Good Food

What concerned me the most was that this restaurant, given the location, would be subpar to what you could get in a larger city. Afterall, even Ulsan does not have any decent European restaurants anymore. Tulla surprised me in many ways. The food was excellent and you could taste the care that went into each dish. In some ways the menu was designed for a Korean pallete but it still has german staples like schnitzel and goulash.

This is good if you are dining with Koreans who may not be familiar with this style of food. Overall, everything that we had during our visit was wonderful. I was particularly impressed with the kohlrouladen, which is a beef cabbage roll. It was rich in flavour and absolutely wonderful. This was a part of their set menu.

The prices were also reasonable given the location and the type of food that was offered. I was expecting the set menu you to be over 50,000 won but at 25,000 won which included soup, bread, salad, the cabbage roll, the main dish and a quaint desert. I found it reasonable.

The Location

This is the only challenge about Tulla is that it is located at the gates of Unmunsa Temple. Simply put, there is no easy way to get there. If you have a car, you can get there by driving up and over the mountains, taking HWY #69 and then heading through the beautiful valley that will eventually get you to the temple. However, by bus you have to get to Eonyang then take the bus to Cheongdo and then the bus to the temple. It runs eight times a day. The first bus leaves at 7:40 in the morning, while the last leaves at 19:30. However, you can also take a bus from Eonyang to Dongkok and then take the bus from there to the temple as well. As you can see, this is a tricky place to get to but the food is worth it, if you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary.
