
Festivals in June in Ulsan
The festival season is well on it’s way with the past few weekends being loaded with activities to do for the whole family. The next couple of week should be no different with lots of stuff going on around the city. This past weekend was the famous Rose Festival and now as we push into June we have a ton more festivals to check out . The 2023 Ulsan Industrial Festival is taking place on June 4th at Ilsan Beach. There will be lots of performances and activities for the whole family Also there will be a huge fireworks festival on this weekend as well down at Ilsan Beach too! The Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival Finally Returned to Ulsan
During the month of February the fires were finally lit across the city of Ulsan for the first time in nearly 3 years. Since the pandemic hit, cultural festivals like this were put on hold for fear a possible outbreak. It was a difficult time for those wishing to celebrate this age-old tradition and for those who love a good bonfire. What is the Daeboreum? This festival dates back to about the Three-Kindoms period in Korea and is usually held on the 15th day of the lunar year or on the first full moon of the lunar new year. This past year it was held on the 5th of February at various locations around the city. Typically, each area in Ulsan builds a Daljib (달집) which roughly translates to “moon house” and even has a little door on it. They are usually piled high with bamboo, pine branches and straw. This also means that the entire daljib burns extremely fast. In the past, people would play 쥐불놀이 (jwibulnori) where people would swing cans of fire and coals around on strings but due to several injuries, this game has slowly been phased out. Ulsan Beaches to Ban Eating and Drinking at Night During the Summer Holidays
Ulsan has made a new administrative order prohibiting eating and drinking at night during the summer holidays to slow the spread of COVID-19. The new rules state that you cannot eat or drink on the beaches from 7 pm to 6 am. Violating this rule will get you a 100,000 won fine. Apartment Fire in Dal-Dong Puts Ulsan in The International News
Around 11:07 pm on Thursday, October 8th 2020 a fire broke out at the Samhwan Art Nouveau Apartment building in Dal-Dong, across from the Lotte Mart. The blaze quickly consumed the 33-story commercial apartment building in a matter of moments due to the heavy winds that night.
