Homemade Hamburgers in Ok-Dong

Posted by on Jul 2, 2019 in | Comments Off on Homemade Hamburgers in Ok-Dong

Words and Images by Jack Glowacki I have been living in South Korea for over 15 years now, Ulsan, Busan, Masan, Gyeongju and back in Ulsan since 2011. In that time I have seen a number of fabulous restaurants, which cater to the expat community providing comfort food, disappear without a trace. It’s like losing a good friend, a good friend who knew how to cook well. I spent the past 3 years living in Okdong, Ulsan, and if you are still unfamiliar with the city’s geography, Okdong is that place near the main entrance to the Ulsan Grand Park, in the vicinity of the Grand Park swimming pool. Non-Korean comfort foods are relatively hard to come by around this neighborhood, as the place is claimed to be the city’s educational hub, and students from all over the city flock here to attend the staggering plethora of Hagwons. Most of the students, either run a budget or are fed by their parents, and frequent places such as the relatively inexpensive Kimbab diner, or the more upscale Raracost. Either option is great and offers good bites, but in order to find a tasty piece of grilled beef to sink your teeth into, one needs to either visit Guyeong-li, or venture out to either one of...

5 Hidden Cafes in Seongnamdong

Posted by on Jun 9, 2019 in | Comments Off on 5 Hidden Cafes in Seongnamdong

If you were to tell me 15 years ago that “old downtown” would be a trendy area full of cafes and trendy restaurants, I would have laughed in your face. Sure, the main shopping area always had a decent assortment of shops and restaurants but it was far from “trendy” and not to mention there was that little matter of the red-light district just down the road. Seongnamdong was an area that you went to have a “good time” in a manner of speaking. Back in 2003, it was dingy and reminded you why most young trendy people went to Samsandong on a Friday night. Now, the area has been given a facelift. The redlights have been replaced with trendy neon signs and chandeliers. As you wind your way through the streets that most self-respecting adults would never dare go down 15 years ago, you will find coffee shops and murals. The alleyways lead to restored buildings and art galleries, with the area’s mascot “Ulsan Kunagi” leading the way. Noxon – 녹손 울산광역시 중구 옥골샘8길 23 Open: 12:00-22:00 Americano: 5,000 won Noxon stands out from the traditional brick buildings of the surrounding area with it’s copper facade and it’s name is actually a play on words meaning “rust” in Korean. I found it by...

Bela Moti

Before we start, I should probably explain that I adore Indian food. I’m British, so a Tikka Masala is basically our national dish and I was also the Secretary of my University’s Curry Society (Yes, we had one.). I have personally high curry standards and whilst Namaskar and Shalimar have filled a gap, neither has really truly satisfied me. But this has all changed now. I went along on a Saturday night with three friends. Bela Moti is...

Bakeries are nothing new in Ulsan. However, when it comes to good bakeries that cater to a western palette is something altogether different. However, good news is on the way as there are a number “hidden gems” located around the city that will satisfy your bread carvings once and for all. Rencontre Located in Guyeongri, near the KEB bank, at the edge of the main shopping area by the parking garage. This has to be one of the more...

Shinsa Garden: Ulsan’s Secret Garden

Words and Photos by Melissa Lang Hip and refreshing. Those are sentiments that come over you when you step inside the Sinsa Garden restaurant. It feels like a little dining oasis tucked within a quiet side street. Since it has opened 3 months ago. The fresh interior of Sinsa Garden has a modern but natural aesthetic. The organic look and feel is unlike any restaurant that I’ve come across in Ulsan during the 2 and half years been here....

A Purrfect Cafe in Ulsan

Posted by on Aug 24, 2015 in | Comments Off on A Purrfect Cafe in Ulsan

By Melissa Lang They say dogs are a man’s best friends, but this hidden gem of a cafe argues otherwise. Last weekend a teacher from my school took me to her favourite cafe with complimentary sea front view, and  a dozen beautiful cats rescued from the streets by compassionate owner, Heung Ho Yeong. Called Cafe “Haemil”, it means the clear sky that has emerged after a rainstorm, the beauty following the chaos. The name was a poignant metaphor reflecting the...

Flapjack Pantry

Ulsan has been getting a lot of great restaurants over the past few years but one area that seems to be lacking is the brunch-style restaurants. While these restaurants have been popular for years in Seoul, they have yet to trickle down this way. While there are “brunch cafes” most have no idea what a good brunch is besides including an egg and some premixed salads from Costco covered with balsamic dressing. So when I saw a post on...

Bombay Brau

Recently there was a lot of discussion on our Facebook page about Bombay Bau, an upscale Indian bistro and brewpub in Samsandong. Located across the street from the Up Square Mall and right above the Starbucks, Bombay Brau certainly has a great location. I decided to check out the place to see what all the talk was about and to find out for myself if the rumours were true. The main reason to come here would be if you are...
